겨울 문턱에서 만난 기적, ‘무지’ 이야기
고양이 이름은 ‘무지개’입니다. 우리는 그 아이를 다정하게 ‘무지’라고 부릅니다.
얼마 전, 고양이 한 마리가 제 사무실로 들어오더니 도무지 나갈 생각을 하지 않았던 일이 있었습니다.
사무실에 도착한 시각은 7시가 조금 안 되었고, 밖은 아직 어스름했습니다. 전날 퇴근길에 문앞에 놓아두었던 고양이 밥그릇이 깨끗이 비어 있었고, 그릇 바로 옆에는 찬 바닥에 웅크리고 잔 흔적이 남아 있었습니다.
“이 추운 겨울에 어떤 녀석이 여기서 노숙을 했을까…”
안쓰러운 마음이 앞섰습니다.
사무실 청소를 마치고 환기를 위해 잠시 열어둔 문틈 사이로, 고양이가 냅다 뛰어 들어왔습니다. 깜짝 놀라 바라보니 집을 나온 지 얼마 안 된 듯 털결이 곱고 참 잘생긴 녀석이었습니다. 길을 잃은 건지 쫓겨난 건지 궁금하기도 하고, 주인이 애타게 찾고 있을까 싶어 문을 활짝 열어주며 나가라고 손짓을 해보았습니다. 하지만 녀석은 밖으로 나가기는커녕 구석으로 숨으려고만 했습니다.
‘아, 이 아이가 이곳을 떠나기 싫어하는구나.’
잠시 고민한 끝에 출근한 직원들을 모아 상황을 설명하고 약속을 하나 했습니다. 고양이의 선택을 받는 사람이 오늘부터 이 아이의 진짜 주인이 되어주기로 말입니다. 그리고 희망을 품으라는 뜻으로 ‘무지개(Rainbow)’라는 예쁜 이름도 미리 지어주었습니다.
우리는 고양이 주변에 둥글게 모였습니다. 고양이는 한 사람 한 사람 발 주변의 냄새를 맡고 얼굴을 찬찬히 올려다보더니, 마침내 제 딸아이에게 다가갔습니다. 머리를 몇 번이고 비비며 곁을 맴돌더니 도무지 떨어질 생각을 하지 않았습니다. 그날 퇴근할 때까지 종일 딸아이 곁을 지키는 모습을 보며 이런 생각이 들었습니다.
“저 녀석이 스스로 자기 주인을 찾았구나.”
하루 종일 녀석의 마음속이 어땠을지 생각이 떠나지 않았습니다. 나가라고 해도 나가지 않고, 그렇다고 모른 척 내보낼 수도 없는… 참으로 신기한 하루였습니다.
이뿐만이 아니었습니다. 며칠 뒤 꿈속에서, 눈과 얼음으로 꽁꽁 얼어붙은 키 큰 나무 꼭대기 가지에 고양이가 위태롭게 매달려 떨어질 듯한 장면을 보았습니다. 꿈에서 깨어나고 나니, 집을 나온 고양이의 절박함과 그 상황을 보이지 않는 누군가가 다 알고 이끈 것은 아닐까 하는 마음에 다시 한번 묘한 감정이 차올랐습니다.
무지개가 우리 식구가 된 지 얼마 지나지 않아, 사무실 주차장 모퉁이에 누군가 놓아둔 고양이 밥과 물이 발견되었습니다. 어느 날은 사무실 문앞에 먹다 남은 사료 봉지가 놓여 있기도 했습니다. 알 수 없는 신비로운 일들의 연속이었고, ‘무지개’와 이전 주인 사이에는 말 못 할 애틋한 사연이 있었을 거라는 생각이 들었습니다.
이 모든 일들을 겪으며 문득 이런 생각을 해봅니다.
‘이 모든 과정에 보이지 않는 섭리가 있었던 것은 아닐까?’
무지의 가출과 추위, 배고픔, 내가 꾼 꿈, 그리고 새 가족을 만나기까지의 여정은 마치 한 편의 따뜻한 드라마 같았습니다. 그리고 이 일을 통해 ‘생명’을 귀하게 여기는 마음이 인간이라는 경계를 넘어 온 존재로 깊숙이 확장되는 것을 느꼈습니다.
새로운 가족의 품에서 평화롭게 지내는 무지에게 문득 묻고 싶어집니다.
“무지야, 잘 지내고 있니?”
가족들 앞에서 편안하게 등을 대고 벌렁 누워, 하얀 배를 하늘로 드러낸 채 자고 있는
모습을 보면 그렇게 마음이 좋을 수가 없습니다. 아마도 매서운 겨울의 문턱에서 선물처럼
찾아온 기적 같은 만남 때문이겠지요. 🐈💕

The Twelfth Inspiration
A Miracle at Winter’s Door: Muji’s Story
Her name is Mujigae(Rainbow), the Korean word for “rainbow.” We affectionately call her Muji.
Not long ago, a cat walked into my office—and simply refused to leave.
It was just before seven in the morning when I arrived, and the world outside was still dim. The bowl of cat food I had left by the door the evening before was completely empty. Beside it, I could see signs that a cat had curled up and slept on the cold ground.
“What poor little soul spent the night out here in this freezing weather?”
My heart ached at the thought.
After cleaning the office, I left the door open for a little fresh air. Suddenly, a cat darted through the narrow opening.
Startled, I looked at her closely. Her coat was clean and beautiful, and she looked as though she had not been away from home for very long.
Had she lost her way? Had someone abandoned her? Perhaps her owner was desperately searching for her.
I opened the door wide and gestured for her to go outside. But instead of leaving, she tried to hide in a corner.
“Ah…she does not want to leave this place.”
After thinking for a moment, I gathered the employees who had arrived for work and explained what had happened. Then we made a promise: whoever the cat chose would become her new family from that day forward.
We had already given her the beautiful name Mujigae—Rainbow—hoping it would mark the beginning of a brighter life.
We stood in a circle around her. She slowly approached each person, sniffed around their feet, and looked carefully into their faces.
Then she walked toward my daughter.
She rubbed her head against her again and again, circled around her, and refused to leave her side. She stayed beside my daughter throughout the entire day, until it was time to go home.
As I watched them together, one thought came to me:
“She has chosen her own person.”
All day long, I kept wondering what must have been going through her mind. She would not leave when I opened the door, yet I could not simply turn away and send her back into the cold.
It was a strange and unforgettable day.
But the story did not end there.
A few nights later, I had a dream. In it, a cat was clinging desperately to the highest branch of a tall tree covered in snow and ice. She looked as though she might fall at any moment.
When I awoke, I could not stop thinking about the fear and desperation a lost cat must feel. A mysterious emotion rose within me: perhaps someone unseen had known her entire situation and quietly guided her to us.
Not long after Mujigae became part of our family, we discovered bowls of cat food and water that someone had left in a corner of the office parking lot. On another day, a partly used bag of cat food appeared in front of the office door.
It felt like one mysterious event after another.
I began to imagine that there might have been a tender, unspoken story between Mujigae and the person who had cared for her before us.
As I reflect on everything that happened, one question remains in my heart:
“Could there have been an unseen providence guiding every step of this journey?”
Muji’s escape from home, the bitter cold, her hunger, my dream, and her journey toward a new family—it all felt like a warm and gentle drama unfolding before us.
Through this experience, I also felt my respect for life growing deeper and wider, reaching beyond the boundaries of human life to embrace every living being.
Now, as Muji lives peacefully in the arms of her new family, I sometimes find myself wanting to ask:
“Muji, are you happy here?”
Whenever I see her lying comfortably on her back in front of us, her soft belly turned toward the sky as she sleeps without fear, my heart fills with happiness.
Perhaps it is because she came to us like an unexpected gift—a miraculous encounter at the very edge of winter. 🐈💕
