What My Dog, Suki, Has Taught Me

Today, I’d like to share a small piece of wisdom that my dog, Suki, has taught me.
When I was growing up, I was surrounded by cows, chickens, and dogs. Back then, however, we didn’t think of animals as pets or companions. Feeding them once or twice a day was considered enough. I never stopped to wonder whether they were hungry, sick, or lonely. Their barking was simply noise, and even when they died, I never shed a tear.
Thankfully, I am no longer that person.
Before Suki came into our home, I often told my daughter, “Whatever you do, don’t bring home a dog or a cat.” But one day, she walked through the front door carrying a tiny puppy.
The moment I saw her, I felt completely overwhelmed. All I could think about was the responsibility that lay ahead.
That reluctant beginning has turned into nine wonderful years together.
We’ve shared everyday life—sleeping under the same roof, eating together, taking walks, cleaning up countless little messes, and creating memories I never expected to have. Sometimes, when I think about all the money I’ve spent on food, veterinary care, grooming, and everything else, I catch myself smiling and asking,
“How did I become this kind of person?”
Suki quietly changed me.
As I watched her do everything she could to communicate with me, I found myself paying closer attention. Little by little, I learned what it truly means to connect with another living being. Before long, it felt as though we could understand each other with nothing more than a look.
Have you ever been “scolded” by your dog?
I have.
Sometimes Suki stares straight into my eyes and barks at me with such determination that I feel like a little boy being scolded by his mother. It always makes me smile.
The greatest gift Suki has given me is love.
She kept the small flame of love inside my heart from going out. The time, money, and care I invested in her never felt wasted. Somehow, she returned all of it to me as a love far greater than anything I had given.
As I write these words, I find myself asking one simple question:
If I can give this much love and attention to a little dog, why shouldn’t I offer the same kindness to the people around me?
Perhaps love begins with something very simple—listening with sincerity, paying attention, and caring enough to understand another heart.
So today, I simply want to say,
Thank you, my daughter.
And thank you, Suki.
